Vigo is still the leader but Triton, Fortuner and Navara are vying for the second position. Some months Fortuner comes second, then a big order of Fortuner comes and Triton is catching up and then Navara fans place a huge order for Nissan Navara and Navara comes second. Please note that Toyota Fortuner is spelled Fortuner and not Toyota Fortuna as some have been known to spell it.

Just as Toyota Vigo took the world with storm, Vigo-based Toyota Fortuner's popularity continues to spread to the farthest shores. It has become so popular that the unthinkable has happened and people are buying it in preference to Toyota Landcruiser Prado and Toyota Landcruiser Cygnus - a feat unthinkable in the past.
The Toyota Fortuner is a luxury sports-utility vehicle (SUV) offering great value at slightly over one million baht. It comes with seven seats, top-notch quality, high performance engine and a fine balance between on- and off-roading capability. This popular SUV is based on wildly popular Hilux Vigo and on luxury Lexus. It comes either with a 2.7-liter petrol (118 bhp @5200 rpm, 241 Nm @ 3800 rpm) or a 3-liter D4D turbo-diesel engine (120 bhp @ 3400 rpm, 343 @ 1400 rpm). Four- or five-speed automatic gearboxes are available.
The all-new Toyota SUV completes the Innovative International Multipurpose Vehicle (IMV) line-up together with the Hilux pick-up, introduced in December 2004 and the Innova Multipurpose Vehicle launched last February.

Although
the car is based on a pick-up its styling is pure SUV with hints at the
luxurious Lexus RX300. As mentioned earlier, it is a 7-seater just as its
recently introduced local competitor, the Isuzu MU7. These seven seats with a
wheelbase of 2750 mm, give us enough space to accommodate the tallest of
passengers.
Fortuner replaces Toyota 4Runner (Fourrunner), which is known as Toyota Hilux Condor in some markets and as SportsRider in Thailand and Indonesia.
Like all modern day SUVs, the interiors are car-like, but unlike a car, the Toyota Fortuner is definitely able to handle most kinds of terrain you can throw at them. So you get the comfort of a car with off-road capabilities of a 4x4.
Toyota has decided to go the safe way - and so this will be a ladder-on chassis SUV with all its attendant benefits. The front suspension will have independent double wishbone suspension which should make for good control.

Fortuner has turned Thailand's SUV market upside down. According to Bangkok Post, it has grabbed a 70.4% share of the market by increasing its sales by a whopping 1,204%. The table on the left shows the vehicle sales figures for March 2005. This is what Bangkok Post had to say about these results:
"The Toyota Fortuner's rear coil-spring setup and performance-oriented oil-burner gave the sport-utility segment a much needed boost with first-quarter sales of 9,388 units for an unprecedented 111.4% increase over last year during the same period.
"More than 6,600 customer
deliveries of the Fortuner SUV based on Toyota's Innovative International
Multi-Purpose Vehicle (IMV) underpinned the performance, while the 1KD-FTV
engine delivering 163hp and 363Nm of torque, has pumped new life into the once
stagnant SUV segment which sold only 4,442 units in the first quarter last year.
"Toyota literally cornered the SUV market this year as seen by its 70.4% market
share and an incredible 1,204.1% jump over last year's first quarter mark.
"This scenario is basically the same as when the previous Sport Rider caused a
major stir in SUV sales before the turn of the century."
Fortuner has caused a similar stir in the Philippines. According to the Manila Times ABS-CBN:
"We have an average of 100 reservations per dealership," boasted Toyota Motor Philippines PR officer Ariel de Jesus. "We’re already talking 1,300 units here for our Metro Manila dealers alone. Even the Innova didn’t get this kind of response," he added.
"De Jesus was referring to Toyota’s latest product in the market, the Fortuner SUV, and his enthusiasm was based on the fact that the Fortuner was formally launched only last week."
Fortuner's runaway popularity is not surprising. It is an explosive combination of Lexus stylishness and luxury with Hilux Vigo's performance and off-road prowess. Its cutting edge design and sport utility functionality has made a convert of SUV aficionados everywhere. With its overall dimensions of 4,695 millimeter (mm) by 1,840mm by 1,795mm, this SUV is not just the best vehicles in its class but also its biggest member.
Its

The Fortuner 4x2 variant is powered by a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine that features Toyota’s variable valve timing system called the VVT-i (the "i" stands for intelligent). What VVT-i does, according to Toyota, is it automatically regulates the intake of air and fuel to achieve the optimum ratio according to requirements, thereby providing maximum power combined with maximum fuel efficiency. The entire vehicle may not qualify as tech-savvy but its engine will. It’s rated at 158 horsepower and produces 241 Nm of torque.
Meanwhile, the top-model Fortuner 4x4 packs a 3.0-liter direct-injection, common rail diesel engine called the D-4D. Also an advanced engine, the D-4D features a variable nozzle turbocharger with intercooler, and this boost of fresh air forced to the engine allows it a 161-horsepower rating and a robust 343 Nm of torque all throughout the 1,400-to-3,200-rpm range. Bolt the D-4D to an electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission and combine it with a full-time four-wheel-drive system and the Fortuner should provide an entertaining ride. (The 4x2 gets the same transmission as the 4x4.)
The Toyota Outstanding Platform (TOP) provides rigidity and control for a more superb driving experience. The 3.0 Liter DOHC 16 valves Direct Injection Common Rail Diesel Engine, with a full-time 4X4 Drive-Train is equipped with a variable nozzle turbo-intercooler maximized with 163 PS through 343 Newton-meter of torque at 1,400 to 3,200 rpm, the highest in its class.
Meanwhile, a responsive and smoother show of power is provided by the 2.7-liter DOHC four-cylinder 16-valves Variable Valve Timing Intelligent (VVT-i) 4X2 gasoline (petrol) engine. The VVT-i engine is capable of 160 PS and a respectable 241 Newton-meter of torque at 3800 rpm that delivers great power but can accelerate quickly with minimum of noise. It generates maximum horse power of 118 kilowatt/5200 rpm.
Enhancing the Fortuner’s strength is its Toyota Outstanding Platform or TOP, coupled with a solid but pliant suspension and advanced noise vibration and harshness reduction materials to significantly reduce noise, vibration and harshness level inside the cabin.
Passengers in the backseat are expected to have a comfortable ride because the Fortuner is equipped with an independent double-wishbone with coil spring and stabilizer at the front, and a four-link suspension with coil spring and lateral rod at the rear.
The Fortuner is designed with safety features inside and out. The Anti-lock Braking System or ABS enables the driver to steer the Fortuner to avoid collision, even during hard braking. Front suspension is double wishbone with coil spring and stabilizer bar. Rear
suspension is 4-link coil spring for smoothness and balance on highway and off

Full time 4-wheel drive
High and low gear can be shifted according to road conditions. Moreover,
Torsen-type limited slip at differential gear supports the power transferring
between front and rear wheels so the balancing and controlling are better and
more precise on the curve.

The three-liter Direct Injection Common Rail Diesel Engine, with a full-time 4X4 drivetrain, is perfectly complemented with an electronically-controlled automatic transmission system. Equipped with a variable nozzle turbo-intercooler, its inherent power is thoroughly maximized with 161 hp and a whopping 253 lbs ft of torque at 1,400-3,200RPM. Toyota’s common rail technology equips the engine with a computer-controlled central fuel injector, which enables the engine to burn fuel at the highest degree of consistency, accuracy and efficiency, resulting to better fuel consumption, and a cleaner exhaust emissions.
A responsive and smoother show of power, on the other hand, is provided by the 2.7-liter, four-cylinder Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) 4X2 gas engine.
